EVEN A BLIND HOG CAN SOMETIMES FIND AN ACORN
This article was written in 05 when the Moral Majority led by the late Jerry Falwel and supported by other Elmer Gantry type preachers who controlled the Southern vote.
Rev. Jerry Falwell stated in a sermon “The idea of the separation of Church and State was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.”
Could identifying Republican states on the electoral map as red have some hidden meaning? The fact that most of our Southern states are red might be a metaphor for Redneck. The South has been a powerful force in our nation since its origin.
While we had black slaves, owners put the 3/5th clause in the constitution which counted each slave as 3/5th of a person resulted in Jefferson defeating Adams for President and gave the slave owners control of Congress and the Supreme Court for many years.
We now have the Bible Belt controlling the political make up of our country. The Bible Belt is now seeping into our Midwestern states and some Western states. It may not be long before we may all be folksy and think the last words of the National Anthem are “Gentlemen start your engines.”
We may also have prayers before all events, prior to getting drunk on Bud and getting into fights.
The Southern Baptists claim to be the dominate religion in the Bible Belt. There are also many wealthy flamboyant Evangelical Preachers such as Jimmy Swaggert, Bob Jones, Jerry Falwel, Pat Robertson etc, who are political powers in our country. They are all overtly obsessed with homosexuals and abortion, but have few concerns about the senseless slaughter in the Middle East, as long as it’s being carried out by a Born Again Christian.
Their obsession with homosexuality could lead one to wonder about their possible hormonal imbalance. No innuendo intended. They remind me of a character in Upton Sinclair’s book, Elmer Gantry. Rev. Jimmy Swaggert recently pronounced in a sermon that he would kill a man who looked at him with romantic intentions. Praise The Lord and pass the Ten Commandments. The Southern Baptist’s Convention concluded that women should be subservient to men. This must be true as it says this in the Good Book. They use Timothy 2:11-12 to justify their decree.
Timothy 2:12 “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over man, but to be in silence.”
The White Baptists in the South, in 1950, also fought integration and backed it up with passages from the Bible. This makes the feminist movement and integration as sinful as homosexuality, if we interpret the Good Book literally.
Much of The South has remained pretty much the same although by law they must give blacks the privilege of using white bathrooms, eating in white restaurants, or staying in white hotels if they can afford it and public schools enroll as many black football players as possible.
The Ku Klux Klan is still in operation in the South. Texas leads the world in executions, and Bubba and friends celebrate by dragging young blacks behind trucks, all in the name of the Lord.
Those without amnesia should remember George Wallace, Huey Long, Lester Maddox, and a long list of former racists in charge of Southern politics. The former Governor of Louisiana is now serving time in prison for extortion and will probably be reelected when released.
The Bible Thumpers in the South have the highest divorce rate in the country.Mississippi,Arkansas, and Kentucky are the three leaders, but worry about the sanctity of marriage being threatened by gay unions. Texas has more teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease among teens than any other state.
The Bible Belt isn’t the only part of the country that claims to be the sole possessors of the truth. The self righteous are everywhere, even in our government and local community.
The preceding are generalizations, but warning signs worth keeping in mind. Donald Kaul’s thesis that the Christian Right could become our Taliban may have some merit.
