A Part Time Congress

A Part Time Congress

“Everyone complains so much about the political campaign for the presidency that I was wondering if it might be a good idea for us to consider another form of government, one that would allow us tohave some other kind of leader other than a President.”

I don’t remember when Andy Rooney made this statement, but it makes more sense today. Our original form of government was a replica of the Roman Empire; with a House of Commons that had little power and the wealthy Senate which made the important decisions. During the great years of the Roman Republic, when things weren’t going too good, they would get themselves a dictator for a little while. They would give this fellow complete control over everything for six month to straighten out the country and then and then the Romans would return to their democracy.

This may be one solution to our do nothing congress with results of a free market with no tether to control big business, banks or Wall Street. We could have our democracy with congress in session for only a couple of months a year and select a dictator the remaining months to straighten out what ever messes they would create in those couple of months. The biggest obstacle would be finding a good dictator. Maybe we could find someone like Diogenes’ who could scour the land searching for an honest person. Someone like Eisenhower would have been a possible candidate.

I watched a half hour of the first debate and lost interest immediately. I forced myself to watch the entire last debate and came away with the feeling; is the best our country can do. Society has made a lot of progress technically but had regressed intellectually. The solutions to our economy amounted to yada-yada-yada.

Change doesn’t start from the middle and upper class, but when the people reach the point in their lives where they rise up in mass and make demands on the rulers.  “A mountain cannot be moved with a splinter.” I watched the labor movement create the middle class as business cannot function without workers.

I’ve always maintained that labor has power if used wisely. An example would be if migrant farm workers refused to work at harvest time they’d   be in a strong position to improve their wages and working conditions.

Refusing to buy product not made in America may be a hardship, but could get the attention of those in power. The occupy movement was a small step in this direction but not a big enough step for mankind.

Those waiting for one of these politicians to help them have a long wait.  “If a politician found he had cannibals among his constituents, he would promise them missionaries for dinner.”

  1. I just could not depart your web site before suggesting that I extremely enjoyed the standard information a person provide for your visitors? Is going to be back often to check up on new posts

  2. A different idea, maybe one worth considering since our congress does so little and what they do accomplish has the handprint of the rich. With the presidential race it is odd to me that so much is expected of the president and yet without the support of congress they can’t get much done. This has been the case the last four years. The congress has effectively tied everything up and made the progress slow in areas of reform and recovery. It all seems like democracy doesn’t work. Maybe Plato was right.
