Our Opaque Government

Al Gore was once asked by a patron, what percentage of what goes on in Washington is the public privy to? At the most 1% was his off the cuff answer, I thought about this at the Obama celebration of the so called bipartisan actions of the Senate in the last month of the Lame Duck session.

As Al gore said we only hear maybe 1% of the content of these bills. When a bill comes out of congress the number of amendments and loopholes in the bill are seldom made public. Most of the senate bills are so watered down by the opposing party and lobbyists. They really have no meaning for the people who elected them. This can be compared to reading the small print on contracts.

Transparency has been the mantra of politicians for a few years now, but when The WkiLeak revelations exposed many of the secret doing in Washington, kept secret from the public, the ruling class was enraged.

The Nation magazine reported on our activities in Yemen kept secret from the public. Amnesty International released pictures of a US manufactured cruise missile that carried cluster bombs used in a December 17, 2009 attack on a community in Abyan, Yemen which killed 14 alleged members of Al Qaeda and 41 local residents – including 14 women and 21 children. At the time of the AI report, June 6, 2010, Yemeni officials said that its forces had carried out that attack.  AI asked the US to explain its role but the US did not.

After Wikileak’s disclosures, it is clear that the US carried out the attack and both countries were lying. Why was this and other similar information hidden from the public? This is merely a minute illustration of our opaque society. You can just imagine what domestic hush-hush finagling has been going on while we weren’t watching.

The nation can now rest easy until January as the secret society has left Washington for Christmas vacation. We can now rest easy with Peace and Tranquility until the middle of January. We now won’t have to worry about whether to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. No more scurrying to buy trinkets to celebrate Jesus birthday.I think Playing a loud version of Away in the Manger or Silent Night in the TV coverage of Black Friday would enhance our Christmas spirit.

Most of the secret society has left Washington to raise money for the next election. New members who promised to create jobs, reduce the size of government, lower taxes, cut spending and make sure we get a white male for President in the next election are already fraternizing with lobbyists to build their coffers for the next election. Many have hired lobbyists as members of their staffs and have received monetary. incentives. They must have forgotten the slogans on their rally signs. How soon we forget. Show and tell time is over; it should now show time.

We can now say Happy New Year before the feud resumes as the month of bipartisan activities  is over.

So true. I remember hearing the comment that we only hear of about 1% of what goes on in government, but at the time, I didn’t worry about it because in my heart I felt that, the President and Congress truly could be trusted to protect the best interests of our nation. I have lost confidence in that. I don’t know if it’s a conspiracy to take us to a New World Order, or if there is simply no concern for the freedoms and prosperity for USA citizens. What I see are special interests dominating every decision being made. I cried during Obama’s inauguration speech. I had hope for change…a government that would protect us against enemies both within and without…I feel betrayed.

  2. So true. Thanks for your thoughts.

  3. What to believe? I think this is why so many people have a hard time voting for people –you don’t really know what is going on or have trust that what they say is true.

  4. Great article!! How things really work in the unknown is really sad. Even in the re-examination of the motives of our revered historical figures, [Howard Zinn], there seems to be a continuous current of greed and power-grabs by the ruling class.

Two thing that I am wondering is ‘have we seen a permanent reduction in the size of our economy?’, and ‘what industries have yet to adjust to the new economic realities?’
